Yedioth Ahronoth: A Diplomatic Tsunami Hits Israel

The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth has observed a growing international isolation of Tel Aviv due to what it described as a “war of extermination and starvation” waged on the Gaza Strip. According to an analysis by writer Itamar Eichner, Israel is currently facing a “diplomatic tsunami” characterized by global condemnations, boycotts, and a surge in international refusal to engage with Israelis.

Escalating Signs of Isolation
The report highlights various incidents across Europe, including assaults on people wearing the kippah, the prosecution of two Israeli soldiers on war crimes charges in Belgium, and cases where Israelis were expelled from restaurants and public facilities simply for speaking Hebrew. It also references protests and attacks targeting Israeli tourists—examples the newspaper says reflect an “unprecedented wave of hostility.”

Institutional and Official Isolation
This isolation has moved beyond the public sphere into international institutions. The European Commission, for instance, approved a recommendation to suspend Israel’s participation in the Horizon 2020 scientific program. An Israeli diplomat described the decision as a “catastrophe for science and Israel’s global image.”

The report also cites critical stances taken by European countries such as Germany and France toward Israeli policies in Gaza, including a call from the Dutch Prime Minister supporting sanctions.

Recognition of Palestine and Waning Western Support
Eichner discusses the growing momentum in Europe and internationally toward recognizing a Palestinian state. This includes remarks by the French President, upcoming plans from the UK, and intentions from Australia, New Zealand, and other European nations to issue recognitions soon.

He notes that Israel has lost several traditional allies, as well as part of the American Jewish community’s support, amid growing divisions within the U.S. Democratic Party and criticism from some Republicans.

Conclusion: Isolation Demands a Strategic Shift
The report concludes that Israel stands at a critical crossroads. It can no longer ignore the significant shift in global public opinion and the stance of international institutions. A ceasefire, it argues, is now essential—not only for military reasons but also to break the tightening political siege surrounding the country.
